Our book for the Autumn 1st half term is:

    This is Our House

    By Michael Rosen

    What this book is about

In ‘This is Our House’, George shuts people out and gives reasons why: because they wear glasses, because they are girls, because they like tunnels. When it is pointed out to George that he has red hair and could also face discrimination, the penny drops – ‘This house is for everyone!’ he says.

    Dadaji’s Paintbrush

    By Rashmi Sirdeshpande

    What this book is about

This is the story about a boy who lived in a tiny village in India.  The boy loves many things but more than all, painting with his grandfather.  The story explores different cultures and ways of living in addition to the boy experiencing the loss of his grandfather but continuing to paint and sharing his skill with the next generation of children.

Our book for the Spring 1st half term is:

    The New Jumper

    By Oliver Jeffers

    What this book is about

The Hueys are all the same but one day Rupert knits an orange jumper. This causes much consternation and Rupert is treated as an outsider until Gillespi also wears an orange jumper.  Over time, the Hueys learn that its ok to be different and many also choose to wear an orange jumper!  This book gives children the opportunity to talk about difference and how, sometimes, people can act fiercely towards someone who is different and why they might do this.

Our book for the Spring 2nd half term is:

    The Truth About Old People

    By Elina Ellis

    What this book is about

The Truth About Old People is a wonderfully illustrated book about a boy’s experience of being with his grandparents.  At the start, the text follows a traditional stereotype, however as the story goes on, he finds that his grandparents lead very rich and exciting lives!  The children will have the opportunity to explore the term ‘stereotype’ and how sometimes we may stereotype different people; how do we recognise a stereotype, and what can we do if we hear someone being discriminatory?
